OWNER DIARY / JAECOO 8

My first new car. My JAECOO 8 story so far.

I wanted my first brand-new car to be a positive experience. I still do. This is the story of the small details, the learning curve and the questions I’m still waiting to have answered.

One owner. One car.

This is a first-hand account, edited for publication and privacy. Workshop updates are attributed to what the owner was told. It is not an independent road test, a confirmed technical diagnosis or a measure of JAECOO reliability.

A new car, and high hopes

This is my first-ever brand-new car. I wanted the collection, the ownership and all the little firsts to feel special. That is still what I want from my JAECOO 8.

I’m sharing this diary because useful ownership information includes the everyday questions as well as the difficult moments. It is about my particular car and my experience. It is not a verdict on every J8, a workshop diagnosis or a reliability score for the brand.

Collection: the little details matter

One of my early frustrations was the screenwash. I reported that it had not been supplied and that the front washer was not working. I later filled the washer fluid and reported that it started working. That concern was resolved; it should not sit here pretending to be an ongoing mechanical fault.

I also noticed a difference between the passenger-side and driver-side interior trim alignment. I photographed both sides so I could explain what I was seeing. Separately, I raised concerns about the rubber seal around a rear window and spots visible around the tinted glass. Those are observations I wanted checked, rather than conclusions about how they happened.

A new car is a big purchase. Wanting the small details to be right is part of wanting the whole experience to be right.

The everyday learning curve

Alongside those concerns, I was asking the usual new-car questions. Which USB-C connection handles data? How do I keep the glossy interior trim clean without scratching it? What is the best way to look after the black paint?

There is an impressive amount of new-car ownership that turns out to involve cloths. Buying the car is one decision; deciding which microfibre goes on which surface is apparently a whole separate hobby.

These details are worth sharing too. A simple photo of the connections can be more useful than three paragraphs trying to describe where to look.

Making charging fit real life

Getting used to plug-in ownership brought another set of questions: charging times, my Ohme setup and planning journeys when I could not charge at the other end. The important part for me was understanding how the car fitted my routine, rather than just reading a figure in a brochure.

I also explored connecting the car to Home Assistant. That was a personal project, not a feature I can claim JAECOO officially supports or something this diary can present as a completed integration.

I’ll keep actual charging observations separate from advertised figures. If I publish running costs or consumption later, they need the journey, charging and mileage context that makes them useful.

The settings I kept revisiting

I found some of the assistance settings frustrating. I reported that settings I changed returned after restarting, including speed alerts, attention monitoring and lane assistance. I also described an occasion on a roundabout when the steering intervention felt unexpected to me.

That is an account of what I experienced, not a technical finding about its cause. It is something to explain carefully and have checked. This diary is not an instruction for other owners to turn off safety systems.

Now, the workshop chapter

My J8 is being investigated, and the diary has become a repair log as well as an ownership story. The distinction that matters is between what I noticed, what I was told during updates and what has actually been confirmed.

In my 2 October update, I recorded that I had been told the gearbox fluid levels were fine and that JAECOO had asked the dealership to check the gearbox pins at both ends. That is a reported investigation step. It does not establish a gearbox fault, a leak or the cause of the problem.

As of 4 October, I have no new update on a confirmed diagnosis, completed repair or decision on my replacement request. I will add the outcome when there is something definite to report, including a resolution if one is reached.

What I want from the next chapter

I have asked for a factory-new replacement rather than an equivalent car with miles already on it. I have also said I would be open to a grey replacement. My aim is still to own a good J8 and have the new-car experience I hoped I was paying for.

I want this diary to stay fair as the situation develops. A confirmed answer deserves the same space as the original concern. If something is resolved, I’ll say so. If something is still a question, I’ll keep it as a question.

The good. The bad. The ugly. Ideally, the next update gives us a bit more of the first one.
