Where the numbers come from
We use the Department for Transport's United Kingdom make-and-model dataset, derived from DVLA records. We include cars with the make JAECOO and licence status Licensed. Vehicles declared SORN are excluded. Model names follow the official generic-model field; unclassified records remain in the total.
The licensed total is a dated snapshot, not a count of vehicles driving at this moment. The government publishes it quarterly, with a delay. We check for new releases weekly and replace the snapshot when a valid release is available.
SMMT publishes monthly new-car registration figures. These are displayed separately and are never added to the licensed total. Preliminary figures may be revised. New registrations do not account for exports, scrappage or changes in licence status.
If a source is unavailable or its format changes, we retain its previous figures and flag the failed check. A successful source check does not make the underlying reporting period newer.
