The J8 is a large plug-in hybrid, so the same car can spend one week on short electric journeys and the next carrying a family across the country. A single number cannot describe both weeks fairly.
Start with the UK SHS-P specification
The current UK J8 uses the SHS-P plug-in system, with a stated 34.46 kWh battery and up to 83 miles of WLTP electric range. JAECOO UK lists DC charging up to 70 kW and AC up to 6.6 kW. These are specification limits, not a promise of constant charging speed.
Six- and seven-seat versions are covered in our J8 model guide. Overseas vehicles with the J8 name may use different powertrains. Match the market, version and measurement before borrowing an economy figure.
The test results, with the small print visible
| Source | What was reported | How to read it |
|---|---|---|
| Auto Express | Its J8 review reports 43.5 mpg on the display over the previous 31 miles, using mixed roads. | A short displayed average. It is not a full-tank measurement or a long-term owner result. |
| Cinch | Its UK-spec road test describes 40–50 mpg on a roughly 600-mile trip through France and Spain with four people and luggage, starting with a full battery. | A longer trip, but an overseas route with an initial battery contribution. Not a UK fleet average. |
| Club owner sample | Not enough verified, consistently measured submissions yet. | We show the gap rather than average unlike tests together. |
Different initial charge levels alone can move a plug-in result substantially. Without comparable conditions, a difference between two reviews is not evidence that one vehicle has a fault.
Will it really cover 83 electric miles?
The advertised figure is a standardised laboratory result. Your actual distance depends on conditions and operation. We have not established a sufficiently documented independent UK owner sample to replace it with a reliable seasonal average.
Measure distance, not just the range forecast. Start with a recorded state of charge, note the route and weather, and record when the engine runs or the car changes operating mode. Do not continue driving purely to empty the battery or recreate an unsafe condition.
For a fair summer-versus-winter comparison, try to compare similar routes, speeds and loads. A cold motorway journey and a mild local journey answer different questions, even if the driver is the same.
Petrol MPG is only half the cost story
A plug-in can use petrol and electricity over the same distance. Count both. If you only compare the petrol receipts, the owner who bought more electricity can appear to have a dramatically cheaper car than they actually do.
Use the calculator below with one complete period and broadly similar battery charge at either end. Record electricity delivered by the charger, including losses, rather than multiplying nominal battery capacity by the number of times you plugged in. Partial charging sessions make that shortcut particularly unreliable.
The calculation is an energy-cost comparison, not total ownership cost. Insurance, tyres, servicing, finance, tax and depreciation remain separate. Prices you enter are yours; we do not silently substitute an assumed UK tariff.
What to record before sharing a range or MPG claim
Identify UK specification, trim and seat layout, dates, miles covered and whether the figure came from receipts or the trip display. Include battery percentage at the beginning and end, petrol litres, charging kWh, weather, route type and approximate passenger or luggage load.
If there were several charging sessions, add their actual cost and energy. If you cannot establish fuel consumed, label the display reading as such. Do not turn a predicted 83 miles on the dashboard into “83 miles achieved”.
A photo of a display can help the editor understand a measurement, but a route map or receipt may contain private information. Remove addresses, payment details and registration numbers before sharing evidence.
Make charging fit your use
Confirm your home supply, charger and tariff with the relevant provider or installer. The car’s maximum AC rate is a limit on the car, so a higher-rated charge point does not guarantee that higher rate. Public DC speed also varies through a session.
Our charging-cost guide helps compare sessions, and J8 settings guide helps you locate the appropriate handbook and record software questions. For persistent charging failures, document the charger and exact messages instead of assuming low range and failed charging have the same cause.

Charging your model
Battery capacity, AC and DC charging windows need their own explanation. Use our JAECOO 8 charging guide to plan sessions, then return here to measure the cost of the miles you actually drive.
What did your miles actually cost?
Use one complete measurement period, ideally with similar battery charge at the beginning and end. Enter electricity delivered by the charger, so charging losses are included. Empty inputs stay empty; these are your figures, not a club average.
