SHORT ANSWER

Use the UK J8 SHS-P handbook and the equipment fitted to your trim. It documents door, tailgate and update controls, but “if equipped” matters: a menu shown in a manual or overseas video is not proof that every UK car has that feature.

There is plenty to learn without memorising every screen on collection day. Start with access, seating, visibility and the controls you use on every trip. Leave experimenting with unfamiliar menus for when the car is safely parked.

Identify the car, seats and software

The UK J8 SHS-P is offered with six- and seven-seat configurations. Check your precise variant in the illustrated J8 feature tour rather than assuming every seat in every trim has the same functions.

Download the UK J8 SHS-P handbook from the official UK source. Printed page numbers below differ from your PDF viewer’s count because of the introductory pages. If the display differs, ask the retailer to demonstrate the function on your own vehicle.

Four useful handbook signposts

UK J8 controls to find while parked
TaskPrinted handbook pageCheck on your car
Unlock the driver’s door firstp88: vehicle settings for unlocking.Confirm the chosen behaviour with everyone outside the vehicle and keys secure.
Tailgate opening heightp101: vehicle settings.Check clearance in the actual garage or parking space.
Easy entry / exit and door preferencesp101: vehicle settings.Keep the seat’s movement area clear and check the fitted equipment.
Over-the-air updates, if equippedp127: update section and required conditions.Follow the displayed instructions and approved availability for your vehicle.

The page references identify controls; they do not override on-screen instructions or establish that a function is fitted to every UK trim.

Warnings and assistance messages are different from preferences

Before trying to silence a message, establish what it means. Note the wording, symbol and circumstances, then look it up in the handbook. A reminder, an assistance-system limitation and a vehicle fault can require quite different responses.

If the instructions say to stop or the vehicle behaves unsafely, stop as safely as possible and seek assistance. Do not treat a settings change as a repair for a braking, steering or power problem. For a persistent non-urgent message, ask the retailer to record the concern and explain the next step.

Software updates: keep a before-and-after record

Note the installed version and the symptom before asking about an update. Request confirmation that the proposed update is approved for the vehicle and what it is intended to address. Availability in an overseas video is not an approval notice for a UK car.

The handbook describes update conditions where that feature is equipped. Follow those and the vehicle’s prompts; do not interrupt a process or install an unofficial file. If the screen does not offer the function described, ask the retailer rather than trying to force it.

After a retailer visit, retain the job reference and check the original symptom during normal use. “Software updated” documents work; it does not by itself establish that an intermittent problem is permanently resolved.

Seats, family use and the first week

Practise entry, seat adjustment and access to the rear rows with the car stationary. Check that passengers understand the controls relevant to their seats. More seat buttons do not mean every position is suitable for every child restraint.

For child seats, use the exact vehicle and restraint instructions, including the approved position tables, rather than interpreting a cabin photograph as an installation guide. Ask for competent fitting advice if you are unsure.

Locate demisting, mirror adjustment, parking views and everyday climate controls before setting off. A handover is a good opportunity to ask the retailer to demonstrate a function on the car you are collecting, then record any unanswered question on your handover checklist.

If a control is missing or behaves unexpectedly

Compare the sales specification with the exact trim, then the handbook and the installed software. Describe what you expected and what actually happened. Avoid assuming that a generic “if equipped” paragraph is a promise that the vehicle has that equipment.

For phone problems, include the phone, operating-system version, connection method and affected app. For charging, include the charger and exact message. The J8 evidence guide explains how we distinguish owner reports from confirmed defects; the MPG and range guide separates normal measurement variation from a diagnosis.
