SHORT ANSWER

Match the handbook to your J7 powertrain before following a menu guide. The checked SHS-P manual documents display, phone, mirror and assistance settings, but a preference is not a repair and not every setting persists after restarting.

The most useful “hidden feature” is often simply a control the handover did not explain. Start with the everyday jobs, and keep safety warnings separate from preferences about sounds and screens.

Get the right handbook first

The UK downloads page lists separate petrol, SHS-H and SHS-P manuals. Menu layouts can also change with software. The exact page references below are for the linked UK SHS-P manual, not a promise that every petrol or SHS-H car has the same screens.

Use the page number printed inside the handbook; your PDF viewer counts the cover pages too. Before reporting a missing menu, note the model, powertrain and software version. The illustrated J7 feature tour helps you check which equipment belongs to which version.

Useful controls to locate while parked

These are handbook signposts, not instructions to perform menu tasks while driving. If your display differs, use the current handbook and ask the retailer to demonstrate the relevant control.

Warnings: identify before changing anything

A sound can be an assistance reminder, a status message or a warning of a problem. Record the exact symbol and wording. Colour alone is not enough to diagnose the car, and turning a sound down does not resolve the condition behind it.

If the display tells you to stop, or braking, steering or vehicle response is unsafe, follow the handbook’s action and seek assistance. For a non-urgent repeated alert, note when it happens and ask the retailer to explain its purpose or investigate it. Do not repeatedly reproduce a dangerous symptom for evidence.

Phone and screen frustrations: make the report useful

Write down your phone model, operating-system version, whether the connection is wired or wireless, which app is affected and what the car displays. A failure to connect, a navigation-position error and audio cutting out are different observations.

Check the basic pairing instructions in the correct manual before experimenting. Avoid deleting profiles or performing a factory reset without understanding what will be lost. If a retailer recommends a reset, record what they asked you to do and whether it changed the symptom.

Use the J7 problems guide for the evidence on reported issues. This settings page does not turn a forum workaround into a verified fix.

What to ask about software updates

Ask for the current installed version, whether an update is approved for the exact car, the issue it is intended to address and what settings may change. Keep the job sheet and observe whether the original symptom returns afterwards.

Do not install files from another market or assume that a video showing a newer screen establishes a compatible update. A newer version number on a different model is not evidence that your vehicle is behind. Ask the retailer to check by vehicle, keeping your VIN out of public posts.

A sensible first-week setup list

While parked, practise demisting, phone connection, screen brightness, units and the parking display. Set seating and mirrors for the actual driver. Ask for a demonstration of assistance messages that you do not recognise rather than relying on a list of supposed hidden tricks.

On the SHS-P, understand the charging display and normal hybrid operation before comparing MPG or electric range. An engine starting when the handbook says it may run is not, by itself, a confirmed fault. Record unexpected behaviour with conditions and ask for assessment.
