SHORT ANSWER

There is a documented JAECOO 7 petrol safety recall and there are published accounts of software and electrical problems. Those records do not tell us how often UK cars fail. Check the exact powertrain, evidence and repair history before calling an issue “common”.

Check the evidence ↓

Start with the car you actually have: petrol, SHS-H hybrid or SHS-P plug-in. A familiar badge is not enough to establish that a reported problem applies to your vehicle.

First separate the recall from the reports

The existing tracker includes DVSA campaign R/2026/069 for a batch of JAECOO 7 ICE vehicles: an ECU wiring-harness fastening concern that can cause a warning or engine stall. The published remedy is inspection and, where necessary, repair or replacement. It is a petrol campaign; this record is not evidence of the same defect in SHS-H or SHS-P cars. Read the official listing.

Use the GOV.UK recall checker and ask a retailer to confirm applicability and completion for your individual car. A campaign appearing online does not mean your car is affected, and a previous keeper saying “it was done” is less useful than a dated repair record. The tracker shows when its automated DVSA refresh is unavailable; it must not be read as a complete live recall register.

What has actually been reported?

This is a source-led watch list, not a diagnosis or a league table. Different symptoms can have different causes, even when they all involve a screen.

Starting, power or electrical symptomsA PistonHeads ownership thread and other indexed accounts describe individual experiences.Treat a loss of normal vehicle function seriously; get professional assessment rather than copying another owner’s repair.

Each source record has its own dates and scope. We do not convert thread replies, likes or repeated news coverage into a count of affected owners.

Why “common fault” needs more than a busy thread

A thread can attract people with a problem from several countries and several powertrains. Owners whose cars are working normally may never post. The same owner may also describe a repair on Reddit, Facebook and a forum. Counting those links as three failures would produce a confident-looking but meaningless result.

Our live summary below therefore counts source records. We cannot yet publish a verified UK failure rate, average repair time or percentage resolved. A repair outcome needs a dated follow-up; a quiet discussion is not evidence that a car was fixed.

If your car is doing something unexpected

Read the exact warning and the handbook that belongs to your car. If a warning instructs you to stop, or the vehicle’s braking, steering or drive response is unsafe, stop as safely as possible and seek assistance. Do not repeatedly recreate the symptom for a video.

For a non-urgent issue, note the date, mileage, powertrain, software version and conditions. Send the retailer an observation rather than a guessed diagnosis: “The display went blank after startup” is more useful than “the ECU is broken”. Use our fault-report template.

Ask for a case reference, diagnosis, proposed action and next review date. After work, keep the itemised job sheet and note whether the same symptom returns. Our UK warranty guide explains the paperwork worth keeping.

Checks that help a used-car buyer

Match the advertised trim and powertrain to the car’s documents. Check service history, open recalls and the evidence of past repairs. During a safe test drive, try your own phone, the radio, parking views and the everyday controls you will use. Ask to see the car start normally and check that any previous complaint has a documented outcome.

Ride comfort and menu preferences are worth assessing, but disliking either is not proof of a mechanical defect. Keep your buying decision separate from the diagnosis of a specific fault. The J7 model guide covers equipment; the settings guide helps you identify controls and record software questions.
