The story
The Independent has published a J8 plug-in hybrid road test.
The club view
Use a review as the beginning of your own shortlist. Take the same passengers and luggage you expect to carry when visiting a retailer, check the seating layout on the actual car, and ask for a drive on roads you use regularly. Our page is a reading recommendation, not a road test or reproduction of the newspaper article. The source may require a subscription.
A review is a conversation starter
We are adding this newspaper piece to the reading list rather than borrowing its verdict and sticking a club badge on it. Different reviewers value different things. Your priorities might be third-row access, a quiet commute or whether the family luggage fits without turning packing into competitive Tetris.
Bring your real life to the showroom
A sensible visit involves the people and equipment that will actually travel in the car. Try getting in and out, sitting behind your own driving position and loading the things you normally carry. If you will plug in at home, think through the parking and charging routine. Those are club suggestions for judging a larger SUV, not claims about what the newspaper found.
Keep the evidence attached
Read the original article for the writer’s impressions and the version tested. Our role is to help you decide which questions to take away, not flatten somebody else’s road test into a universal thumbs-up or thumbs-down. A model name on the boot does not make every trim, powertrain or software version interchangeable.
Your shortlist deserves its own verdict
There is no single correct set of priorities for a family car. Someone who regularly fills every seat may judge access and flexibility differently from someone who wants space for two adults and the occasional grand tour of the garden centre. Think about what you actually need, then use reviews to challenge your assumptions. If a feature is essential, ask for a demonstration and written confirmation on the version you are ordering. It sounds wonderfully unglamorous, but an agreed specification is much easier to live with than the sentence “I thought it had that”. Reading widely is sensible; buying for somebody else’s priorities is rather less so.
