The JAECOO 5 and 7 look like relatives, but choosing between them is more useful than asking which one has the most impressive brochure. This UK buying comparison uses current manufacturer information; it is not a claim that we have road-tested both cars together. Looking for a fully electric car? The E5 is a separate alternative, not a set of battery specifications to slip into a petrol J5 comparison.
First, compare the right cars
| Car | Powertrain | Trims | Plug in? |
|---|---|---|---|
| J5 petrol | 1.6-litre turbo; seven-speed dual-clutch automatic; FWD | Pure, Luxury | No |
| J7 petrol | 1.6-litre turbo; seven-speed dual-clutch automatic | Deluxe FWD, Luxury AWD | No |
| J7 SHS-H | Non-plug-in petrol hybrid | Pure, Deluxe | No |
| J7 SHS-P | Plug-in petrol hybrid | Luxury, Black Luxury | Yes |
The current official J5 page and official J7 page separate these versions. J7 does not mean seven seats: both cars here have five. Do not infer AWD from an SUV shape or a hybrid badge.
Looking for the electric alternative? See the JAECOO E5 hub. E5 needs a charging plan; its range, battery, V2L and EV-only features do not belong in a petrol J5 comparison.
Which should you shortlist?
- A petrol routine and the equipment you use: start with J5 Pure and Luxury, then compare a complete J7 quote.
- Hybrid driving without charging: include J7 SHS-H. A plug-in advertised with a huge MPG figure is a different proposition.
- Regular charging access: consider J7 SHS-P and work out how much of your normal mileage could use that charge.
- AWD or towing is essential: settle the version and approval first. Do not choose a payment and hope the mechanical details work out later.
- Awkward luggage: take it to both cars. A folded pushchair rarely cares how persuasive the sales pitch is.
These are starting points, not a universal winner. The sensible car does your week without making your finances or daily routine harder.
Boot space and dimensions need context
| Specification | J5 petrol | J7 current UK table |
|---|---|---|
| Seats | 5 | 5 |
| Luggage capacity | 480–1,180 litres | 500–1,265 litres |
The difference between the starting figures is 20 litres; that alone does not tell you which takes your buggy, dog crate or holiday cases. The J7 figure differs from some earlier reviews. Our J7 practicality guide explains that discrepancy.
The current official J7 table lists 4,500 mm length, 1,865 mm width excluding mirrors and a 2,672 mm wheelbase. We have not confirmed an equivalent current UK J5 dimension table from an accessible manufacturer document, so we are not filling the other column with overseas data. Check your garage opening including mirrors and the exact car before committing.
Set your own driving position, sit behind it and fit your child seats. Load your usual luggage with the rear seats upright. Check the load lip, floor height and tailgate clearance. Separately framed photographs illustrate the families; they are not a scaled size comparison.

Equipment: compare trim with trim
J5 Pure lists an 8.8-inch instrument display, a 13.2-inch central screen and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Luxury adds heated and ventilated power front seats, Sony audio and panoramic glass. The manufacturer specification sheet separates those additions. See the J5 feature tour for what the kit does.
Write down three things you will use every week. Good headlights, a comfortable seat and a camera readable in rain may matter more than a feature you demonstrate once to a passenger. Pair your own phone and try your usual navigation app while parked. Adjust the seat, mirrors and temperature without somebody doing it for you.
The same trim name across cars or powertrains does not guarantee identical equipment. Use the J7 model hub to choose a version and ask for its model year and equipment in writing. Family photographs can show equipment absent from a lower trim.
Choosing the petrol J5? Our Pure versus Luxury comparison sets out the equipment differences and a viewing checklist.
Petrol, self-charging or plug-in: match your week
If you cannot reliably charge at home or work, begin with a fair comparison of petrol and non-plug-in hybrid quotes. If you can charge, list a normal week of journeys and the electricity tariff you would pay. Include long trips: counting journeys and counting miles give different answers.
For a plug-in, calculate electric and petrol miles separately. Include charger installation if needed, public charging and the extra purchase or lease cost. A laboratory combined MPG figure is not a promise for a winter motorway run or a car seldom charged. The J7 powertrain guide has an adjustable energy-cost comparison; the J7 charging guide explains the routine.
Keep ownership costs broad. Insurance, servicing, finance and depreciation matter alongside fuel. Obtain your own insurance quotes before ordering: similar-looking cars can produce different premiums for the same driver.
Retail prices and monthly offers: compare the whole deal
Use our J5 petrol offers and JAECOO price comparison for dated prices and payment examples. Keeping promotional numbers there helps prevent expired campaigns becoming permanent buying advice here.
Compare the same contract type, term and mileage. With PCP, check the customer deposit, contribution, APR, total payable and optional final payment. With a lease, compare the initial rental, all monthly rentals, fees and excess-mileage terms. A low monthly headline with a large upfront payment is not automatically cheaper.
Obtain an itemised quote for the exact powertrain, trim, paint and delivery terms. Ask whether it depends on stock, finance approval or an order deadline. Save that quote with the order rather than relying on a headline screenshot.
Towing, reliability and support: do the boring checks
If you tow, use the J7 towing guide and confirm the exact vehicle approval, trailer limits and towbar arrangement. We have not verified a current UK J5 towing limit for this comparison. Do not substitute an E5 figure, an overseas specification or the next model up.
Read our reliability guide and warranty guide, then ask the local retailer about servicing, booking times and parts support. Public fault reports help you choose questions and inspection points; they do not establish failure rates or prove one model more reliable than the other.
Your two-car test-drive checklist
- Arrange the exact powertrain and trim. Identify equipment differing from the car you would receive.
- Use the same roads, including your normal low-speed manoeuvres and motorway section.
- Check the driving position, rear seats, child seats and luggage with your people and belongings.
- Try phone pairing, cameras and everyday controls while safely parked.
- Compare full quotes and obtain written equipment, servicing and delivery details.
Our verdict: give the J5 a fair chance before paying for a larger badge, and give each J7 powertrain its own assessment. The winning car should make ordinary Tuesdays easier, not merely win a specification table.
Make the next answer better.
