SHORT ANSWER

Choose SHS-H if you want a hybrid without plugging in; consider SHS-P if regular, sensibly priced charging fits your week. Petrol remains a different proposition, including an AWD Luxury version. Compare actual deals and usage rather than assuming one badge always wins.

“Hybrid” is doing rather a lot of work on car adverts. The J7 has two quite different hybrids, and the petrol versions are not identical either. Choose the powertrain first and the equipment second.

Deluxe1.6-litre turbo · FWD · 7-speed DCT5The front-wheel-drive petrol version. No charging cable required.
Luxury1.6-litre turbo · AWD · 7-speed DCT5The all-wheel-drive petrol version; Luxury equipment includes a head-up display and Sony audio.
Pure1.5-litre SHS-H · FWD5Petrol-electric hybrid with a small battery; it does not plug into a charger.
Deluxe1.5-litre SHS-H · FWD5The higher-trim self-charging hybrid. Choose this separately from petrol Deluxe.
Luxury1.5-litre SHS-P · FWD5Petrol-electric plug-in with an 18.3 kWh battery. Regular charging is part of the ownership plan.
Black Luxury1.5-litre SHS-P · FWD5The plug-in hybrid with a black styling treatment. It is a distinct UK trim, not a fourth powertrain.

SHS-H is the non-plug-in hybrid. Its battery is managed by the car; it does not give you a home-charging routine. SHS-P is the plug-in hybrid, with a larger battery and external charging. Neither name tells you everything about trim, drive layout or towing approval.

Put your own mileage and prices into the comparison

YOUR MILES. YOUR ASSUMPTIONS.

Compare annual energy costs

The starting numbers are illustrative scenarios, not measured JAECOO results or forecasts. Replace all three MPG assumptions with evidence relevant to your driving. Use the percentage of miles driven electrically, not the percentage of journeys: ten short school runs do not cancel out one long motorway trip.

Enable JavaScript to compare your scenarios.

Calculations stay on this device. Energy only: excludes purchase price, charger installation, finance, tax, servicing, insurance and depreciation. Electric-mode petrol use, if any, is not modelled. Use a weighted tariff if some charging is public.

To estimate the electric share, list a normal week’s miles and decide which could actually be driven after a charge. Add long trips before calculating the percentage. A car that covers most journeys electrically can still cover a much smaller share of annual miles that way.

The three MPG inputs deliberately remain editable. One laboratory figure, one road-test result and one winter motorway estimate are not a fair three-way comparison. Try optimistic and pessimistic scenarios; if the winner changes easily, the energy saving is too uncertain to carry the entire purchase decision.

Three useful starting points

  • No practical charging: compare SHS-H with petrol on the same roads and obtain complete quotes. Do not assume a plug-in’s advertised combined MPG is what you will get without charging.
  • Regular inexpensive charging: SHS-P becomes more interesting as the share of electric miles rises. Include installation cost and charging you will buy away from home.
  • Frequent long trips: test depleted-battery behaviour, refinement and real petrol use. A large advertised combined range is not a fuel-cost calculation.

Carwow’s current powertrain comparison favours the plug-in overall. That is an editorial road-test judgement; our calculator asks a narrower question about the cost of your assumed energy use. Both are useful, provided they are not mistaken for the same thing.

Towing, drive layout and practicality can decide it first

A low calculated annual bill is irrelevant if the chosen version cannot meet your towing requirement. The current UK table lists different braked limits for petrol, SHS-H and SHS-P; check the J7 caravan guide before choosing. Do not assume the SHS-P is AWD because petrol Luxury is.

Test your luggage in the exact version. Published boot figures differ between current official information and some earlier reviews; our practicality guide explains that discrepancy instead of quietly choosing the most flattering number.

Turn an energy saving into a purchase decision

Subtract the annual energy costs for two realistic scenarios. Then compare that difference with the additional purchase cost, any home-charger cost and the period you expect to keep the car. If the dearer car saves £300 a year but costs £3,000 more, energy alone would take ten years to recover the difference before finance or resale effects. That is an illustrative calculation, not a forecast for these models.

For a lease, compare total payments and the same mileage allowance rather than treating the purchase price as your outlay. Insurance, servicing and depreciation can outweigh a modest fuel saving. Obtain current quotes; promotional prices and residual values are not fixed.

Before signing

Ask for the full powertrain and trim on the order, the model year, charging equipment included, a service quote and a test drive that reflects your own use. For SHS-P, use the dedicated charging guide to check the routine. Keep the assumptions you used in the calculator and compare them with your first few months of recorded ownership.
