The J8 lets you choose EV, HEV and EV+, with separate battery-protection modes. The December 2025 manual recommends Smart battery protection for balanced use and reserves EV+ for emergencies.

JAECOO 8 SHS-P: Luxury / Executive, subject to the seat and equipment qualifications below
UK manual review; not a hands-on vehicle test. A missing menu may reflect equipment or software; this guide does not promise a feature can be enabled.
Before you begin
Park safely before changing settings. Match the powertrain, equipment and screen layout to the handbook for your own car. A manual describes possible equipment; it is not confirmation that every UK trim has it.
Step-by-step instructions
- Park with the J8 in READY.
- Press the fitted EV/HEV button, or open Audio System → Vehicle Setting → Quick Control and choose HEV, EV or EV+.
- Check the corresponding instrument-cluster indication to confirm the change.
- For battery strategy, open the power-management screen and choose Initial, Smart power protection or Forced battery protection. The cited section names that screen but does not give a longer universal tap path.
- If using Forced, select the target offered by the vehicle and decide whether to memorise it. Without memorisation, the manual says the next start returns to Smart.
- Check the driving mode too: Sport requests HEV. EV supports Normal/Eco; EV+ supports Eco in the handbook’s linkage table.
EV, HEV and EV+ explained
| Mode | What the manual means |
|---|---|
| EV | Electric drive is prioritised. Low battery or system conditions can change operation. |
| HEV | The hybrid system can start/stop the engine for driving or generating power. |
| EV+ | Allows deeper battery discharge for additional electric running. The manuals recommend this for emergencies only, not as the everyday default. |
Choosing a battery strategy
Initial suits daily driving with charging available. Smart balances fuel use with retained electric energy. Forced aims to hold the target battery level for later demand, including external power, but can worsen fuel economy. Choose a target based on your actual trip and appliance needs; this manual does not supply one ideal percentage for all owners.
Why EV sometimes becomes HEV
Low battery can cause an automatic switch. The vehicle can reject a requested EV change when conditions are unsuitable, and periodic engine self-maintenance can run after extended electric-only use. Selecting Sport is another documented reason to enter HEV.
Troubleshooting
- Cannot select EV: the battery level or other conditions may prevent it. Read the instrument-cluster message instead of repeatedly forcing the selection.
- Engine starts despite charge remaining: the manuals describe periodic engine self-maintenance after long electric-only use. HEV also starts and stops the engine as needed.
- Electric range changes: temperature, heating/cooling, driving style, hills and traffic affect the estimate. It is not a promised distance.
- Battery hold uses more fuel: forced battery protection prioritises battery level and the manuals warn that fuel economy deteriorates.
Safety and limitations
- EV mode is not a guarantee that a plug-in hybrid’s engine can never start. The handbook describes automatic engine self-maintenance and low-battery changes.
- Never leave a READY hybrid in an enclosed or poorly ventilated space. Do not use accelerator-triggered stationary generation as a casual charging tip.
- Choose settings while parked and monitor the actual mode indication. Drive smoothly and maintain sufficient fuel as well as charge.
