SHORT ANSWER

Both current UK plug-ins advertise up to 56 miles of electric range. The official braked trailer limits differ: J7 SHS-P 1,500 kg, OMODA 7 SHS-P 1,250 kg. Choose through real cabin and driving tests, not the shared parent company alone.

Related brands make this an obvious showroom comparison. They do not make the cars interchangeable. This is a sourced buying guide with a test-drive checklist, not a claim that the club has driven both.

Manufacturer figures, checked 2026-10-03; not a club road test. JAECOO source · OMODA 7 SHS-P source. Plug-in against plug-in. Vehicle plates, exact trim and model-year documents take priority for an individual car.

Specify SHS-P on both quotes. The wider J7 range includes petrol and SHS-H versions, and OMODA also lists petrol choices. A cheaper headline from another powertrain is not a like-for-like plug-in deal. Keep trim, model year and included equipment visible throughout the comparison.

What the independent comparison adds

In Carwow’s June 2026 head-to-head, Mario Christou preferred the OMODA for its space, comfort and driving experience. That is useful attributed road-test opinion, not a verdict produced by this club. Read the original for the conditions and detail, then see whether its priorities match yours.

Our contribution is to turn the comparison into checks you can repeat: the same passengers, luggage, roads and quotation terms. Styling may draw you to one car; a week’s worth of awkward tasks should decide whether the preference survives.

Cabin technology: try the actual trim

Ask the retailer to demonstrate the equipment on the vehicle being quoted, rather than the most expensive display car. OMODA has introduced a Noble Tech version, so an impressive feature in a video may not belong to every OMODA 7. Our J7 feature tour likewise separates its versions.

Bring your phone and perform the tasks you use every day: navigation, calls, audio and climate adjustment. Check visibility, parking manoeuvres and seat comfort with your usual driving position. A moving screen is entertaining in the showroom; effortless everyday operation has to last much longer.

A caravan can make the shortlist for you

The current published towing limits above differ. If your caravan exceeds one version’s approved limit, a favourable finance quote cannot solve that. If it sits below both, you still need the vehicle plate, train and axle limits, towbar approval, noseweight and actual loading checks.

Use the J7 towing guide for the checklist and real caravan examples. Verify the OMODA separately using its own vehicle documents. Do not carry assumptions from one related brand into the other.

Equal advertised range does not mean equal bills

Electric range is a test figure. Your electricity price, electric-mile share, driving conditions and petrol use determine your actual energy cost. Log comparable complete periods and include charger-delivered energy; a high dashboard MPG can hide the electricity bill.

Obtain current service and insurance quotes for both cars. Ask each local retailer how warranty enquiries and replacement transport are handled. A shared corporate parent does not establish equal reliability, identical parts availability or the same experience at two separate workshops.

Our shortlist advice

Try the OMODA if cabin comfort and the independent review’s preferences align with your priorities. Keep the J7 prominent if its design, exact equipment or the published towing allowance addresses a specific need. Test the cars back to back and compare the total contractual costs.

We do not recommend paying for a badge distinction you cannot feel or use. Equally, we would not dismiss a practical difference because the brands are related. If you choose a J7, an ownership update after several months can add evidence beyond the showroom impression.
